EN ISO 13849-1 and EN 62061 are standards which relate specifically to safety system design. From 1st January 2012 these are the only safety system design standards which give the presumption of conformity with the MD. The status of harmonised standards for EU Directives is regularly reviewed and published in the Official Journal of the EU. In Part 1, ISO 13849, the design of the safety system is based on the risk assessment performed by the manufacturer of the machine. This risk assessment identifies the safety functions required to mitigate risk and the performance level these functions need to meet to adequately mitigate the identified risks. The EN 954-1 standard (categories) is being phased out and replaced by EN ISO 13849-1 (PL, Performance Level) and EN 62061 (SIL, Safety Integrity Level). Although the deadline for using EN 954-1 is set to 31/12/2011, it is beneficial to start applying the new standards as soon as possible as many new standards no longer refer to EN 954-1. The intent of ISO 13849 – 1 is to provide a means to determ­ine the func­tion­al safety require­ments and sub­sequently, to ana­lyze the res­ult­ing design and devel­op a veri­fic­a­tion and val­id­a­tion plan. Note 1 is also sig­ni­fic­ant.

This part of ISO 13849 provides specific requirements for SRP/CS using programmable electronic system (s). It does not give specific requirements for the design of products which are parts of SRP/CS. Nevertheless, the principles given, such as categories or performance levels, can be used.
